You choose a directory (not a symbolic link) where you want to install the DataStage engine. You also need to provide a directory that can be used temporarily during the installation process.
As you create each project, you specify a directory for its location.
There are defaults for all of the above.
There is nothing that is really "topology" about any of that.
DataStage clients are only installed on Windows machines, and connect to the DataStage server via TCP/IP using port number 31538. You may need to open this port in your firewall.
