How can we create an .xls file in Datastage

You first need Excel ODBC driver installed (installed on most machines, Windows machines with MS Office).

Once confirmed, use the ODBC stage and start the magic!

you can create a .csv file which will open in excel

Heads up, XLS file has limitation of Rows(65535).

That would depend entirely on the version. And as noted, you're much better off creating a simple csv file which Excel will happily (and automatically) open and convert.
