Building a Customer Operator and using a reference link.

I'm looking at building a Custom Operator where one of the links coming into the Custom Operator is a DB connection. I would like to set the incoming DB connection as a reference link so it's used only once. Does anyone know if there's an easy way to do this from within the custom Operator the DB link is being feed to?
