Replacing .csv file with XML

Hi,
I am new to XML file stages in datastage. I am currently using a .csv file to do lookup and would like to use an xml as input due requirement changes.
Would appreciate if any one can give me the following details:
1) Do i need a single file xml file with all columns or multiple file with one column in each.
2) Do i have to use xml folder stage or not.
3) Is any special plugins we need to buy for doing lookup with the xml file.
As i see only 3 stages xml input, xml output, xml transformer stage in my realtime tab.
4) when i drag drop the xml input stage in my job designer staging area i get the following error:
(40906) Unable to create the new object
