Performance/tuning options for WebSphere Application Server

What other options exist, besides faster hardware of course, which will help make the WebSphere Application Server run faster? In my current functional test environment, WAS is quite resource hungry on both CPU and Memory and with just one user I can make it a bottleneck and a point of frustration (my frustration) due to its slowness. Being that I'm not happy with its performance with just myself testing at the moment, I'm not sure that I could expect my developers, especially when there are 5 or 10 of them hitting the system all at once, to be very happy with its performance. This makes me think that poor performing vendor software often drives better performing hardware, which indicates to me double dipping if it is intentional.
