Currently we have Windows based IBM info server system running on following high end configuration which had been set up recently,

Operating System: Windows Server 2003 R2

Manufacturer: HP

Model: Proliant DL380 G5

Processors: 2 x quad core Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz

Memory: 32 GB

Hard Disks (internal): 2 x 136 GB RAID1 and 6 x 136 GB in RAID5

We have been advised by vendor/consulting company to move IBM info server to Unix stating below reasons

That 2.8 Terabyte of data to be extracted from various legacy systems transformed & loaded to target systems based on oracle & SAP.

There could be about 1000 jobs & about 70-80 jobs will be running in parallel at any given time up to 7/8 hours.

Under these circumstances, wondering will it make sense to migrate to Unix from current high end windows environments

It might be high-end Windows but it's not high-end UNIX. With UNIX you can get far more powerful hardware - at a price, of course.

The other thing I like about UNIX is how rarely you need to re-boot anything.

And before investing in a high $$$ SMP box, take a look at IBM's blade server offering. It will offer easier scalability at lower cost... and Information Server will come pre-installed and pre-configured.
