It is questions like this that make me wonder and that bother me. Is DSXchange considered to be a replacement for the help files, the documentation and other sources?

1. the DataStage manuals which are installed with each client installation contain many of references to environment variables. A quick search of the DataStage documentation directory for "environment variable" returns 30 books that have the term. Most of these have multiple references including detailed descriptions.
2. The online help (f1 button) also has numerous references and descriptions.
3. DSXchange "search" has 1503 matches on the term "environment variable"

and you actually expect someone to go to the effort of explaining the concept?

Why everybody is wondered b'cos, before ask about any doubt use manuals then your doubt will be resonable. try to use then raise your doubt.

Simply during the runtime job needs some variable to hold the environment values. For example - Your source DB details, Target DB details, Application Id, Run id etc.... This variables can be reffered in your job.

Hope you could try now to explore in your job.
