Do I understand well that it is not possible to calculate the max/min of a character field. Since datastage converts the output automatically to a double, the calculation becomes always 0 in case of a string input.

I read here something about preserve type, but that option is not available.

Yes we cannot do any aggregations on string fields in aggregator.

'Aggregator' can be used with option 'Preserve Type' as true. If you don't have this option in your 'Aggregator' stage under 'Aggregations -> Column for calculation -> Available properties to add -> 'Preserve Type' then you might have to contact provider for this fix.
