backup and recovery best practices

I have read several posts that mention using the uvbackup (and uvrestore) commands and it got me thinking about the different approaches to backing up DSEE. How can these be used in the context of an overall backup/recovery strategy. That is, I would imagine that a cold backup (DSEE down) would provide the most reliable restore candidate, but can the uvbackup/restore commands allow for "online backups/restores?" Just trying to get some context for when these commands might be useful.
