I used environmental variables in my dev servers and used them in all my jobs.
When I imported those jobs into my QA environment , i added same envirmental varibles with my new server info, so that i dont have to go and change in each and every Job. It did not take effect with the modifed values i enterd.
I hope this is clear enough.
