Linux Red Hat v4 64 bit

Post by kwwilliams »

I'm curious if there is anyone else out there running version 8 on a red hat v4 64 bit environment?

We are having some stability issues here, and these issues are making us consider moving back down to 32 bit. We installed it on 64 bit because that is our standard if we can make it work. We believe we are one of the few in this setup because, there is no standard install for 64 bit, we ran into an issue that is OS related that we were the first to find and my favorite ... when talking to tech support while performing the installation they responded with "you can do that?"

If you have this setup please let me know if you are having issues.

Thanks,

Keith

If you have installed Information Server 8 on Linux Red Hat v4 64 bit, I would be interested in hearing the experience that you had stabilizing the environment. We have had one problem after another, we are always one IBM patch away from a stable environment. The experience reminds me of taking part in a Beta program versus dealing with a industry leading product.

I am considering replatforming to something in which a larger percentage of customer present(at least something that they have a standard install). However before doing that I thought I would ask if anyone has seen this install configuration in their or their client's environment.

In this case no responses and a response are both helpful to me, so thank you to the entire community!

Keith,
We have successfully installed DataStage 7.5.2 on Linux RedHat V4 32 bits, and it's quite stable. I was told that the version 8.1 that yet to come on November this year will be fairly stable on Linux 64 bits. Why don't you wait for this and forget about 8.0.x for now if you are currently struggling with this level. I have heard quite a bit of unstable stories for 8.0.x, so I am not motivated to test it and I advise my client to wait for 8.1 for now. Let me know if you find a way to stablize the 64 bits environment.

Pneuma Lin,

I thank you for your response, if it had been up to me several things would be different. My company has architectural standards and one of them is the preferred OS is 64 bit red hat. This is an intial install with some proprietary code that will only work 8.01 or greater. In my previous employ I would not have moved to 8 for a while.

Thanks for your help and advice. I am curious did you hear from IBM that they would have a stable release on 64 bit or is that from another source.

We are currently running 8.0.1 on Windows 2003 Server and having quite a few stability issues as well. We were toying with the idea of moving to RHEL 64.

Have you got all the components running on the same box (i.e. Engine, Repository and WAS)? If so, have you been able to identify which component is causing the instability? What type of symptoms do you get?

Our symptoms include clients hanging and clients not able to log in.

Hi Keith,

We installed version 8.0.1 on SuSe Linux 32 bit and currently finishing the development. As per Production standards we are in the process of migrating to 64 bit version and having some issues during the install and migration process. Is there anything special you did to compile the jobs properly in 64 bit environment like pointing to different libraries ?

Jim,

What kind of memory your client desktops have ? I struggled with the same issues you are having and observed we need a minimum of 3GB RAM to run the clients.

Thanks,

Aruna.

It wouldn't install,

for 64 bit linux,t he installation process requires that you first install DB2 9.1 64 bit for linux, and WAS (with some patches) for 64 bit linux.

then do the IS installation.

- The only thing that I have been able to install is the metadata repository (and if I do it separately from the rest of the layers)
- It is trying to install the fedaration server (wich I never select), and (I assume), because it is a 32 bit version, it wouldn't install with the 64 DB2.
- the Domain layer doesn't install either, the installation process adds som -Xk and -Xp switches to the server.xml file, preventing WAS from starting

i'm currently working the case with IBM, but they haven't found the reasons for the error.

I have an installation of version 8.0.1 up and running on 64-bit SUSE Enterprise Linux 10.

It was far from a smooth installation. The domain layer was most troublesome, but installing the domain layer for one product at a time seemed to finally work.

Mike,
Were you able to get any support for 64-bit from IBM???

It is listed as a supported platform, but I was able to muddle through on my own; therefore, I don't have any experience with support to share.

I gave up on 64-bit Fedora 8. I thought Fedora 8 might be similar enough to Red Hat, but I couldn't get it to work and ultimately abandoned the effort because I couldn't expect support on an unsupported platform. That's when we switched to SUSE.

After installing DB2 and WAS 64 bit with patches and fixpacks did you installed 32 bit packages in Linux box ?

I am giving the list of packages just in case...
Package Name:
glibc-2.4-31.2
xorg-x11-libs-6.9.0-50.14
libstdc++-4.1.0-28.4
libstdc++-devel-4.1.0-28.4
compat-libstdc++-5.0.7-22.2

Other than that, you also need 32-bit GCC 4.1.0, this requirement is documented here: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... 23&rs=2321

Before installation we also created XMETA and IADB databases ourselves. The only glitch we have right now is the with IADB as we installed DB2 with server encryption option and having issues connecting to IADB. IBM is looking into this right now.

I could successfully migrate jobs from my earlier 32 bit projects and test them.

Hi there,

We have been running Red Hat AS 4 64 bit for some time with no issues.
The one thing you have to change is the compiler and linker flag swithes if you are going to compile a transformer, you must set the -m32 flag. This will ensure that the c object code gets compiled in 32 bit mode instead of 64 bit. Besides that no issues with installs.
