How do I specify the path of a remote file (not residing on the AIX box where my EE server runs)

Okay, you're posting a Parallel question in the Server forum.
If the file is not local, then either command line FTP it local, use the FTP stage to read it remotely, NFS mount the remote file system, or use rcp to copy it local.

How do you specify the same remote file from a UNIX prompt? If you can do it from there (someone has mounted its file system), then you use exactly the same technique in DataStage.
