How to establish mainframe DB2 connection

I need DSXChange community's various thoughts about establishing a connection to Mainframe DB2 database. Currently, We are using DB2-UDB API to do this. Is there any other stage/ways to establish this connection, since i heard that DB2-UDB API stage is based server technology? This is first time i'm working on something which needs to access Mainframe DB2 database.
