Datastage Client 8.7 running very slow

Hi
I'm using Datastage version 8.7 fix pack 2, after working for just few minutes i start, the datastage client is getting very slow, i need to wait for 10 or 15
seconds to just see the cursor flashing again when writing column names,
my internet speed is 15Mbps, anyboody know how to check what's the issue is?

You mentioned your internet speed, does that mean your client is remote with regards to the server? And is this a change in behavior, meaning was it fine in an earlier version or in this version but before the fix pack?

yes, i'm working in remote using internet connection, it was bit ok earilier,
now its too bad, like i said, i have to wait for nearly 10 to 15 seconds,
after entering each word in the lookup or xml stage or any stage..

Still curious about the second question. The best answer for solving that remote problem (which we implemented way back in the 7.x days) is a Citrix server or something else of that ilk. Your client is installed on a Citrix server local to the DataStage server and you connect via a Citrix client... makes all the difference in the world. 8)

No i havent installed any fix packs... and i previously as well i have been using 8.7 only.. but i'm working in a different project and in a different unix server where the datastge is running ( but will that have a effect on datastage client).. i want to know whether the problem is due to the internet speed or my computer or in the unix server.. my computer is having decent confguration.. how to check the other options??

Usually more of a network issue than anything in your configuration, unless you have a minimum rig and you say it is 'decent' so we'll set that aside. How about running a tracert from a DOS prompt on you PC to the ip address of the server?

I'm certainly no expert so can't really 'help help' with the analysis... but those numbers seem high to me. Mine are generally two digits, down around the 20ms range. Make sure you run it more than once and at different times of the day. You've also left off the IP addresses / names of the hops which can help with the analysis. You can also google for "traceroute analysis" to find many discussions on how to read / troubleshoot those results.

You might also have a chat with whomever is handles your network, see if they have any thoughts on your issue. However, laggy is laggy and something like a Citrix server may be your only true solution.

Now i'm finding a pattern when it gets slow

--when i initially open the designer and start opening a old job or creating new
jobs... its normal..

Once i compile a job or ran a job after that it goes terribly slow, even if i want to open a transformer or any stage, it takes too much time.

then if i again restart the designer it is normal up to the point of compiling or running a job

any ideas?

Hi,

From my own experience with working remotely, if you have the "Show Performance Statistics" turned on in Designer that will slow it down considerably.

even disabling doesn't make any difference....

anything happens after we compile or run the job??? that cause the slow down

Could be a memory leak... that kind of thing can cause a slowdown that only a reboot / restart would clear up. I'd check with your official support provider (or check what is it called, Fix Central?) to see if there are any client-side patches for the issue. As a guess.

Just as a matter of interest, how much available memory does the client machine have?

In the drive the Datastage client is installed, around 100GB free space is available

Memory as in RAM... not hard drive storage.
