How to release a job in DataStage 8.x

Post by tjr »

Hi there,

This is a topic for the veterans :)
I am currently doing a migration from 7.1 to 8.7 at a client side which relies pretty much on the "release a job" feature for versioning. I wonder if this functionality is still part of 8.x? Apparently we can import released jobs, but how can we release a job in 8.x?

Well, I think if found the answer here

http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/iisin ... _Page.html

It mentions: "The release number n.N.n. This field is obsolete." Thus releasing a server job is no longer supported.

Was wondering if it was obsolete by now or not. That is such an old feature... I recall working with and worrying about it back in the 3.x and 4.x world, I do believe. Once Version Control came out it was pretty much obsolete and I never used it again... and I'll wager most people never used it at all. Hence your non-answer.

Want to detail how your client's migration strategy works and how exactly it is reliant on releasing a job? I'm sure plenty of people here could help you find alternatives in the new world.

Hi,
From version 8.5, if I'm not mistaken,
there is actually a package utility
enabling the packaging and deploying of repository objects into different projects and servers.
I can't recall the exact name of this utility
but I did use it a few times.

I'll try to get the name (if no one posts it before I get it)

Integration with source code control systems - to which Roy is alluding - uses Information Server Manager (which you DO have - it's free with Information Server). Direct support exists for IBM source code control systems such as ClearCase - for others you need their Eclipse plug-in. We have made good use of this capability with SubVersion.

Hence the request for details of their current process.
