This is not completely true. All the versions of datastage prior to 8.0 had only file based repository i.e. UNIVERSE and all the later versions including 8.0 has both Universe as well as Unified metadata repository (xmeta) which uses relational databases DB2, Oracle or Sql Server.

Haven't worked on 8.7 yet but from the documentation I don't see any change as far as the metadata repository location is concerned.

In Universe, data is stored in hashed files and hence I said file based repository.

Universe is a database as well and when you get right down to it, all databases store data in 'files' of some kind.

Version 7 and earlier could be considered two tiers - client and server. Version 8 is four tiers - client, engine, services, metadata repository (database). The product is larger and it has more functionality. If you go to the Information Server 8.7 Information Center you will see very good guides on the upgrade.
