There is no difference whatsoever in terms of the information stored within them. It's purely a formatting difference.

Some commands, such as dsjob -import or dsimport, (available in version 8 only) can only use DSX format files. There exists a conversion utility called xml2dsx to convert XML format export files into DSX format.

Thanks for all the reply,

Is there any scenario where using .xml file is a must?

I cannot think of such a scenario. The .xml format was most likely implemented so that DataStage could boast being "open" and that it uses a common interchangeable format.

There is an extra step needed when importing a .xml export file, it will first be converted to .dsx 'under the covers' automatically and then imported. This conversion can be... lengthy. FYI.
