I need to know how often should DataStage SE be bounced?
Will the bouncing release all locks?
Should locks be manually scanned and released before bouncing?

Locks are held for a reason. Locks held by defunct processes may safely be released using appropriate tools - there is no need to restart the server. Locks held by valid users should be released by those users.

In practice we reboot DataStage v7.5 about every 3 a 4 months... at that time datastage starts to become erratic and won't start up some jobs anymore.

LOL :D in theory it remains up for ever. In practice you see in DataStage v7.5.1 on a Solaris server that after 3 a 4 months sometimes jobs won't start properly anymore (you get the starting lines in the log files, but nothing really gets started) and that it gets worse with time.

If you restart it's ok for the next 3 months, we already raised support tickets with IBM for it without sensible answer.

Some OS's are pretty bad at terminating pids and releasing locks; and it is easier to bounce the DataStage engine than to go in and clean up any zombies or locks. I would guess that if you do that cleanup you wouldn't need to restart. I've seen system uptimes of over a year and the developers can't recall having restarted DataStage during that time.

We're on H-PUX here and 'rebooting' DataStage is a pretty rare thing, and is only done 'when needed'. And that would tyypically be when things get really jammed up and we start seeing the behaviour Ogmios mentioned.

I can only remember needing to do that about 3 times in the last 4 years. [shrug]

Our DS server, running 7.5.1A SE on Win2K3 has been up for nearly 2 years now and we haven't had any major issue. The last time it was down, it was for upgrade from version 7.

"Bouncing" = "rebooting" = stopping and then restarting DataStage.

Ah... sorry, missed the 'a' in front of the word 'bouncing'. I only jumped in because there have been times in the past where people haven't understood what 'bounce' means in that context, so was trying to be helpful. Silly Wabbit.
