There are so many books out there that you have a large choice. What book to start with depends upon your general IT knowledge and how you prefer to learn. UNIX for Dummies isn't all that bad to get an overview and a start; but if you really wish to understand UNIX I would recommend a more formal approach using a textbook on Operating System design that uses UNIX for its examples.

There are specific books for the different scripting languages available on UNIX, you also have a large selection there.

the most common reference books that I see are published by O'Reilly and if you follow the link you can see how many different areas within UNIX are complex enough to warrant having a whole book devoted to them.

My favorite book is called "Tips of the UNIX Masters". It is out of print but I have seen it used on Amazon.

There is also a website out there called www.books24x7.com. This is a subscription site, but it has thousands of books online covering many different business topics. My company provides a corporate interface for this site, but in the past I paid my own way and it was worth every penny.

Just a thought.
