Profiling Flat files on Profile Stage

Hi,
Can anyone let me know the steps to profile a flat file on PROFILE STAGE.
I would basically require information on
1. How to profile a flat file on Profile Stage?
2. How to create a ODBC connection for flat files?
3. On Unix Server how do we create a connection for text file?
Any additional information will really help.
