Here is an IBM link about installing patches in v8.1.

You will need a patch for server and client side. Might have to speak to IBM if you don't have both the v8.1.1 patch files.

There are a whole bunch of patches which need to be applied before you run the v8.1.1 upgrade. You can find this from the IBM passport advantage website.

Your Information Server will need to be running when you try the upgrade - the installer will stop and restart the WAS and other components if it is needed but it certainly needs to be running when the upgrade starts. It can be hard finding 8.1.1 components on Passport advantage, make sure you have expanded and hunted through the component list and the related component list to see if you can find extra files/readme documents. There may be prerequisite fixes and patches before you install 8.1.1. These can be found on the IBM Fixes website which I described in this blog post: tinyurl.com/dsfixes.
