Inter-stage variables

Probably a simple question ...

How can I compute a value in one stage of a job (say total of all values in a particular field) and use it in a subsequent stage (eg add a computed-field thats essentially FieldValue/SumOfAllFieldValues)?

I was hoping to use a something like a "stage-variable" that was incremented in the 1st stage and used in the computation of the subsequent stage ... can this be done?
