Hashed files vs table lookups

Hello to all.
Pardon my ignorance, im trying to speed up a job in particular a lookup
which taking a little bit of time, and i would like to know what is best, a
lookup to an indexed table or an hashed file preloaded in memory? My guess
goes to the hashed file, am i right?
