Clean-Up

Post by admin »

Hi there :o)

I would like to submit you a question. I would like to know the pro and cons (if there are) abou using the CleanUp option on Administrators Panel. Can you pls provide me some information about this "istruction" more detailed than the ones on dsadmgde.pdf or on Help on-Line ?

Can you pls tell me also if the usage of CleanUp Button on Administrator Panel is the same as the usage of "Rebuild Repository indices" option on DS.TOOLS? If not, could somebody provide me some information also on "Rebuild Repository indices" of DS.TOOLS.

In any case could somebody give me exhaustive explaination on both statements???

Thanks a Lot

:o))

CleanUp Project from the Administrator client performs two tasks, one is to re-build the indexes on the Repository, the other is to seek out and delete any "orphan" files remaining after the jobs that use them no longer exist. These correspond to options 2 (rebuild Repository indices) and 4 (check integrity of job files) on the DS.TOOLS menu on the server.

You should not need to clean up the project unless you suspect there is something wrong, for example not all objects are showing properly in Manager client, even though they ought to be. Or if you receive messages when deleting a job indicating that some files could not be deleted (perhaps the jobs log was open because it was held open by a Director client when the job was deleted in Manager client).

The Repository is a database; all objects are indexed on Category (which drives the tree structure in Manager). Some things are also indexed on other characteristics for faster searching; for example the table that contains table definitions (DS_METADATA) is also indexed on access type (server/mainframe), access category (the combination of category and access
type) and platform type.

That said, it does no harm to cleanup the project occasionally (perhaps once or twice per year), even though the process corrects nothing. You do, however, have to have exclusive access to the project.
