UniVerse is a post-relational database that is also known as a "Pick Database". It also happens to be the database system that the current engine is written in.

It's been owned by IBM since 2001, since when two new versions have been released (as well as some point versions). Find out more at IBM website - there are millions of licences installed world wide.

UniVerse has all the features you would expect of a database; transaction logging, replication, backup utilities, speedy access to data, and so on.

The reason you've not heard much about it is that "they" (its various vendors over the years) always sold it as an embedded database; you purchased an application from an application vendor, the application just happened to run on UniVerse.

UniVerse is not only a database, it's also a development environment with a programming language (UniVerse BASIC, aka DataStage BASIC) and various other tools for the application developer.

The story for UniData is identical, except for a different initial vendor. See IBM website for UniData information.

DataStage began life as a UniVerse-based application. The Windows client interface was intended to render the engine invisible (as occurred with most UniVerse applications).
