If you're using DataStage 5.x, you can have DataStage itself notify by email. Create your batch as a "job sequencer" in Designer and incorporate a notification activity (which eventually calls a function called DSSendMail).
Identify your batches with meaningful names, such as RunCustomerJobs, and this will make external monitoring pretty much painless.
