datastge to mainframe connectivity

we have requirement that ,our datastage server jobs need to use files of mainframes as source files.
How we check between datastage and mainframes connectivity is good or established well to extrace source files from mainframe server. please help us on this and let provide details is there any specific configuration we need to do in mainframe and datastage as well as to interact both.
