Datastage Time Data Type

The elements HH:MM:SS can be fitted in 3 bytes as such the YYYY-MM-DD is fitted in 4 bytes. Then how does the the time data type occupies the 5 bytes in memory?
YY YY MM DD
Byte 1 Byte 2 Byte 3 Byte4

HH MM SS
Byte 1 Byte 2 Byte 3
Can any one help me in explaining this?
