Your DataStage Repository is a database schema in which your designs and runtime information are stored. Because it is a database schema it has database tables for storing these things. The tables are indexed. If the indexes ever lose synchronization, it becomes necessary to rebuild them.
You should only need to fix them if they are broken, the main symptom of which is that the DataStage clients do not display expected objects, such as jobs or routines.
