job compatibility issues between V7.5.2 and 8.1

Post by cosec »

Hi All,

We are trying to decide if its necessary to migrate from Datastage version 7.5.2 to Version 8.1.

Our current set of job designs use the following components:
1. Websphere MQ Stage
2. XML Stage
3. Hash File Stage
4. Sequential File Stage
5. Aggregator Stage
6. Transformer Stage
7. DB2 /UDB stage

I would like to check if there would be any impact to our existing jobs if we do upgrade ?

Also, is it recommended to upgrade if we will be using datastage with basic componenets mentioned above ?

Please highligh if there any advantages in upgrading. Thanks

There have been a few thoughts on this topic in the forum....search around....but for a few other considerations...

QualityStage is totally integrated now, into DataStage. This is one of the most significant reasons, outside of new stage type functionality that is here or coming on top of the 8.x platform. Being able to perform standardization and matching, right in-stream in a Job is a significant improvement over the old ways.

Metadata Workbench. A far cry from the metadata capabilities in the past. Data Lineage reporting "thru" all of your jobs and projectrs, with deep query capabilities. And consider that you could take advantage of Metadata workbench now, by installing 8.1.x and getting to know the larger infrastructure of "8", just by loading up your .dsx design metadata. You can get value from that even without yet doing the QA work necessary for any migration.

Once you have version 8, there are other related parts of Information Server, some integrated with DataStage, that you might want to take a look at.

There are other subtle features in 8.x DataStage (Performance monitoring comes to mind, as do things like the Distributed Transaction Stage), and I'm sure there are a variety of patches also, in addition to those things noted above and in other threads.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Would like to also check, if there has been any noticeable difference in performance after the upgrade ?

Slight disagreement with Ernie here. QualityStage is only totally integrated for parallel jobs, and we're in the server forum here.

If you want to continue to use QualityStage in server jobs, you must preserve QualityStage version 7.5 and call QualityStage jobs through qsrtmngr from version 8.x server jobs.
