Upgrading to DS8.0

Post by yaminids »

Friends,

Currently we have DataStage 7.5 installed in all our environments.
Is it worth it to upgrade to 8.0? Please guide me to the posting, if any, which discusses the topic

Thanks

It is almost certainly not worth upgrading to 8.0, because that version has been superseded by version 8.1 which has fewer bugs.

That said, it's a BIG step. You will need much more server capacity and client machines with minimum 2GB of RAM.

Eventually you will need to upgrade, because eventually IBM will pull support for version 7.5. But that's probably some years off yet - at least two - because that won't happen before version 9 is released, and they haven't even started working on that yet (at least not in anger) - the next version will be either 8.2 or 8.5, depending on who you ask.

We installed 8.0 but it did not support wave feature. Hence moved to 8.1

Waves have been in the product since version 1.0.

Double click the entry for any completed job in Director status view. Wave number is reported.

Odd indeed, we are successfully using wave processing at 8.0.1

Right, you seem to be a little confused about "waves", they've always been there.

The biggest problem with 8.0.x is the sheer bugginess of it, hence the advice to skip it entirely now that 8.1 is out and go straight to that.

Maybe the op is referring to Waves ruleset for qualitystage (integrity).

Some stages don't fully support waves, perhaps that is what was being referred to.

Ray,

We use only the basic funtionality of DS. Do you think waiting for version 9 is a good idea?

Thanks

If you are not embarking on major development I don't see the value to upgrading. If you are using it a lot just evaluate how useful the new functions are: slowly changing dimension stage, range lookups, operational metadata, metadata workbench impact analysis and data lineage across products, advanced find etc.
