I've never had to use the debug mode; but perhaps if you explained what is going wrong (i.e. RPC daemon not running) the debug output might help.

Thanks. I had some other threads on this. problem was that the se server wasn't coming up after working well for 2 weeks. I got impatient with peoplesoft support and filed an ascential ticket and got the answer. Somehow from the unix side major pieces of $DSHOME/DSEngine got deleted, like all the uv data dictionary files d_*. This killed Datastage SE coming up enough that it didn't give good error messages but bin/uv -admin -start still looked like it was trying to come up, hard problem to debug. The files deleted situation is probably not one a lot of other users will experience. I will mark this thread as resolved. I just thought there might be some obvious error message in the debug mode that someone might be able to notice.
