I would like to know whether it is possible to write an IXF file using DataStage. All I know about this type of file is that it is a file used by IBM, for loading into DB2.

Once you know more about it, the answer is yes. But you have to know what is required. For example, there is a post somewhere that writes an IMF file for QualityStage. Search for it. This is a metadata file rather than a data file, but will get you started.

It will be pretty difficult to create ixf files from within DataStage. Just create a delimited ASCII outputfile and use the "DEL" option of the DB2 loader.

In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.
