with DataStage you have two basic methods to choose from - you can use an ODBC connection to the Sybase instance or you can go directly using the Sybase OC. Usually the direct connection is better (i.e. faster) but there are cases where you might want to use ODBC.
I dislike being negative, but the question you posed doesn't really make it seem like you have a copy of DataStage to work with or have been to a training course; unless you wanted to ask a different sort of question. the functionality of reading from and writing to either databases or other objects is so integral to the ETL process and DataStage that the question seems odd and out of place.
