Good it worked for u, I think its better this way, so as we would be more careful with data types.

U need to handle nulls and sometimes u need to even check for spaces,
ex: len(trim(linkname," ","A"))=0

Search the forum first. As for getting the current timestamp in DataStage, one option is u can use DS Macros DSJobStartTimestamp, u can use if in the transformer stage constraint.
