I took a quick glance at the .pdf for ERStu50 and it looks like you are supposed to save your model as a .dm1. So, you will need the API's for ER/Studio installed on the same PC as the MetaStage Admin. I am not sure if there is a way to just install the API's for ER/Studio but the quickest fix for t...

What are some of your issues? I can speak for the PowerDesigner and ERWin data modeling metabrokers more specifically. Some metabrokers require you to save the data models in an XML format from within ER/Studio. ERWin, PowerDesigner, whatever. Some metabrokers require the Microsoft XML Parser to be ...

The job design palletts are different between a server side job (Unix/AIX) and DataStage 390, so the migration path based on DB2 UDB is somewhat flawed. There are some possibilities but fundamentally it is not transparent to DataStage. It is possible to write a server side job to connect to DB2 on U...

When I first started using MetaStage I had the same questions. I was fortunate to spend some time with Barbara Nichols at an Informix User Conference and she got me started in the right direction. She is one of the original developers of MetaStage and the moderator of this forum. She may be a good r...

1) Are you trying to justify defining/using "meta data" as a corporate direction or are you trying to justify tools like MetaStage to sell the benefits of meta data to management? There are three main types of meta data. Business, Technical, and Process. Business meta data is geared toward...

From a basic perspective, how will developers and end users know what is in your Data Warehouse?

Of course there are many more reasons to use meta data or MetaStage but if you think about it, the question above is the primary answer to your question.

Can you elaborate a little about your setup? What version of DataStage/MetaStage are you using? Where is you process metabroker running? Where is your MetaStage client? What database and connection type are you using for the MetaStage repository?

Do you have the ERWin Client installed on the same PC as MetaStage? MetaStage uses the ERWin API's to do it's work. If you do not have the ERWin clinet installed, I thought there was a way to just have the ERWin API's on the same PC as MetaStage without a true ERWin license but I am not sure.

This reply was from a message I responded to about 10 days ago in this forum. I would follow the MetaStage documentation as mentioned. In addition, the following is a high-level overview of the basics: =============================================== Database rights needs to be correct or you may run...

Since DataStage 5.x has been out for probably 2 years (which is a long time in terms of software), I was curious if you had plans to upgrade to DataStage v6 or even v7 when it is released. MetaStage has evolved a lot over the past two years and continues to do so. To be still using MS 2.3.4 is almos...

First and foremost, you may want to upgrade to v6 or even wait for v7 coming soon. There has been a lot of work on import performance but nothing earth shattering. We are bringing in over 500 jobs and probably 1700 tables defs. From what I can tell you are doing practically all you can. There is a m...

That is good advice. I can tell you (the community) that Barb Nichols is very knowledgable on metadata, data modeling, MetaStage, etc... Just a few years ago at the Informix User conference, Barb took the time to give me a person to person MetaStage primer which helped immensely  . Even after t...

From the perspective to get it up and running, Ray's answer may be sufficient. However, there is a lot more that goes into understanding metadata and how to communicate this application to users. If you are not familiar with object models and classes, it may take some time to fully understand how Me...

As an overview, this is to the best of my recollection. MetaStage Admin, Directory Admin, and Listener should be installed on Windows platform. Process Metabroker gets installed on same box as DataStage (can be AIX, Solaris, or Windows). The database for MetaStage can be any ODBC compliant database ...
